Play this falseta to warm up
This one is from Gitanos Trianeros (solea) by Paco de Lucia. The 16th notes come at you relentlessly while demanding that you keep stretching. |
2 |
|
The most iconic solea faseta
This is, again, from Gitanos Trianeros. Paco made small revisions to the bass notes later on but the main melodic structure of the falseta remained the same. |
3 |
|
Practise your legatos with this one
From Recuerdo a Patino (alegria) by Paco de Lucia. The falseta forces the player to hold bass notes while articulating legato sequences. |
4 |
|
El Tempul (buleria) Finale by Paco de Lucia
Observe the behaviour of the thumb while the index-middle fingers are playing long picado sequences. This is a very important little piece to develop a stable right hand technique. |
5 |
|
Buleria Alzapua
From El Tempul (buleria). Despite the complex sound of it this falseta is surprisingly easy to play. Just make sure you don't miss the index up and down sequence that separates the repeat section. |

|
Picado with Bass
This one I picked up from my friend Juan Gomez, one of my favourite flamenco guitarists. I believe he is playing a farruca picado sequence he deciphered from Nİno Ricardo with his added bass notes. |
7 |
|
Legato VS Staccato
A beautiful falseta sequence from Paco de Lucia's El Tempul (buleria) where a curvy legato section is followed by a short staccato picado response. Great exercise to practise switching between two opposing musical expressions. |
8 |
|
Arpeggio - FreeStroke - Pulgar workout
A great series of falsetas to practise three main techniques of flamenco guitar. The quick position shifts at the end are quite challenging for the left hand. |

|
Fast Pulgar Falseta por Solea
This one requires a fast pulgar, which is something you develop through practice. Beautiful composition. I thought this was by Paco Pena as I saw him play it in a concert. But then I hear Riqueni play the same thing. Not sure who the composer is. |
10 |
|
PPi sequence from Solea de Cordoba
From Paco Pena's iconic solea, this one requires quick thumb sweeps across two strings followed by index. Even though the technique itself is a physical triplet, it is used to create 16ths in this piece of music. In other words you play 4 notes per beat. |
11 |
|
Reflexive Picado Speed - Riomar
Practise this to develop picado speed. Imagine the concept of loaded spring related to the very first legato sequence followed by a burst of picado notes. This is from Paco Pena's famous fandangos de Huelva. |
12 |
|
Fandango Arpeggio
Beautiful and somewhat challenging arpeggio from Paco Pena. Make sure you hit every note when you practise and always start slowly so you can observe each finger stroke. |
13 |
|
Pulgar Picking in Two Directions
This one is from Paco Pena’s buleria where he uses the pulgar in two directions like a pick. It is easier than it looks. Think of it like a mini-alzapua on a single string. |
14 |
|
Solea Endurance Loop
From Gitanos Trianeros (solea) by Paco de Lucia. Don’t do this until you are sufficiently warmed up. It really forces your left hand to the limit. |
15 |
|
Pulgar - FreeStroke - Acera
Acera del Rio by Paco Pena - the main falseta. A beautiful combination of pulgar and free stroke in dialogue. No, it's not meant to be played so fast. I decided to challenge myself in the spirit of the practice loops. |

|
amiPimami triplet arpeggio falseta from Paco Pena
From Acera del Rio (solea) Arpeggio and free stroke sequences played strictly with amiPimami fingering |
17 |
|
Triplets and then 16ths
From Acera del Rio (solea) by Paco Pena. Great pulgar and index practice where you first play triplets and then 16ths with the same melody. Promotes pulgar agility. Practise with metronome. |
18 |
|
Solea Tremolo
Beautiful solea tremolo by Paco Pena. One of my favourite tremolo falsetas and it is surprisingly easy to play. |
19 |
|
Long legatos and then aggressive pulgar
A falseta from Solea de Cordoba by Paco Pena. Great way to practise contrasting musical expressions. |
20 |
|
Tremolo-Legato-Arpeggio
Another solea tremolo from Paco Pena but this has triplet legato and sextuplet arpeggio inserted into it. Quite challenging to play I must say. Good for practice. |
21 |
|
Crazy Solea Alzapua
This is not normal alzapua where you play a note and then two chords with down and up strokes. Mr Pena literally doubled down on the down stroke :-) Requires a fast thumb and possibly super glue on it. |
22 |
|
Solea Pulgar with Chords
The C7 - G7 variation of solea by Paco Pena. Pulgar is used to sweep across several strings to play chords. |
23 |
|
Gorgeous falseta from Plaza Alta (solea) by Paco de Lucia
Just beautiful! |
24 |
|
Plaza Alta (solea) Pulgar Falseta
Looong legato sequence. |
25 |
|
Plaza Alta (solea) - an unusual way of using thumb in a Pami arpeggio
Notice how the thumb is hitting the second string to play melody while the fingers arpeggiate the first 3 strings. This si possible with the right thumb-finger positioning. |
26 |
|
Sabicas - Paco Pena arpeggio falseta por solea
Great to practise switching from arpeggio to picado and reverse. |
27 |
|
Acera del Rio Delicate Intro
A good piece to practise switching from pulgar yo free stroke. |
28 |
|
Taranta in rhythm
The rhythmical section from Paco’s Aires de Linares. |
29 |
|
Recuerdo a Patino Intro
Lots of pulgar downstrokes. Good workout in controlling the flamenco pulgar. |
30 |
|
Alegria rasgueado, picado, arpeggio
From Recuerdo a Patino by Paco de Lucia. Note that I am violating the compas by playing sextuplet picado instead of 16ths. But it is a good agility drill. |
31 |
|
Alegria pulgar
A challenging remate in measures 3 and 4. Practise it slowly. |
32 |
|
Alegria Finale
From Recuerdo a Patino by Paco de Lucia. A good mix of alzapua, rasgueado and picado. |
33 |
|
Impetu Main Theme
A buleria by Mario Escudero. It was made famous by Paco de Lucia. The earlier you start learning this the better. |
34 |
|
Impetu Arpeggio - Left Hand Endurance
This one should challenge both hands actually. |
35 |
|
Riomar (fandangos de Huelva) intro
One of my favourite pieces to play. |
