Reflexive Picado Speed (tabs)
I saw this video by Jorge Caballero (amazing classical player) some time ago where he talks about the concept of reflexive speed. He says that in reflexive speed "one initial force creates a chain reaction in the fingers" sort of like a springboard which pushes your fingers to move faster than usual for a short while. The initial stroke that makes the first note creates a high potential energy like a loaded spring. The release of this energy translates into instantaneous speed. Or, to use a term we are more familiar with, SPEED BURST.
I have already utilized this technique to a certain degree in several of my picado drills.
Now I wish to present to you a picado agility exercise that uses the reflexive speed mode as its main focus. Download the following tab file:

The first part of the exercise utilizes the reflexive speed method via a repeated index finger stroke. The first stroke incorporates a pull off (legato) that gives the right hand the time it needs to prepare for the upcoming 4-note energy release. This 4-note burst starts with the index finger as well. The second part of the exercise is a straightforward descending scale that places your fingers back into the initial position. You play 6 notes per beat.

Practise this exercise regularly and you will unlock the speed mechanism in your i-m fingers. Those of you who prefer the i-a picado can also use the exercise for speed practise as the underlying speed burst mechanism is exactly the same.
